Obtain Letter of Authorisation (if applicable)

What is a letter of authorisation? When does it apply?

A letter of authorisation (LoA) is an official letter issued by a responsible authority granting you the rights to carry out the intended Project or specific activities.

Some countries require previous authorisation before you can engage in certain types of activities. Commonly, the need for a LoA applies to:

  • Engaging with Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs).
  • Environmental assessments.
  • Land rights, especially if the proposed Project area is public land managed by a government agency.

If a LoA is needed to undertake a part or all of the Project activities, the authorisation must be obtained before you begin the implementation.

If this task does not apply to the Project, mark this task as “Not applicable.

Requirements

Only the letter itself can be accepted to complete this task. For ERS to use your LoA as a certification document, it must contain:

  • The name of the Project and the Project Developer (including its registration number)
  • The location of the Project, including geographic coordinates,
  • The name of the IPLCs to which you were granted authorisation to work with (if applicable),
  • The duration of the authorisation,
  • If the letter is not written in English, Spanish, Portuguese or French, you must provide an English translation with the original document.

If a LoA is required and you have not obtained it by the end of the Feasibility Study phase, ERS accepts to advance to the next phase under the condition that the LoA is submitted before the end of Project Design.
